Retired CIA analyst Ray McGovern will discuss torture and prisoner abuse.
In 2003, Ray McGovern founded Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS). McGovern on the Bush Commission : “This Commission is doing what our German forbearers in the 1930s did NOT do. They sat around, blamed their rulers, said ‘maybe everything’s going to be all right.’” On March 3rd, 2006, McGovern marched into Congress with 15 others wearing Guantánamo Bay orange jumpsuits and declared: “As a matter of conscience, I am returning the Intelligence Commendation Award medallion given me during my 27-year career in the CIA. The issue is torture, which inhabits the same category as rape and slavery - intrinsically evil. I do not wish to be associated, however remotely, with an agency engaged in torture.” McGovern did daily briefings for George H.W. Bush and is now exposing how George W. Bush used false “intelligence” to justify the war in Iraq. In addition to VIPS, he is also part of the Christian Community.
The moderator for the evening will be Jed Stone, past president of the Illinois Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and anti-death penalty activist.
